Tales of Middle Earth Fanfiction Awards

“I think I'm... quite ready for another adventure.”
Bilbo Baggins: Return of the King

As you may or may not have heard, the Middle-earth Fan Fiction Awards have come to a close. Whereas the MEFA archives will remain active for general perusal, the awards themselves will no longer take place. However, a group of former MEFA participants have begun the process of building a new readers' choice awards for the Tolkien fandom.

The Tales of Middle Earth Awards present the entire Tolkien fan community an opportunity to help build an award system from the ground up, and be a part of this evolution of our collective pastime.

Those of you that would like to see how the new awards are developing may join us at the ToME Awards Planning community on Live Journal (http://tome-awards.livejournal.com/).

You do NOT have to sign up for a (free) Live Journal account to view and comment; anonymous posting is allowed in the group, though we like to know your fannish name if you enter discussion.

Additionally, Open ID will allow you to leave signed comments on our LJ community just as if you had a LiveJournal account. If you use Gmail, Yahoo!, Blogger, Myspace, Flickr, AOL, or WordPress, you likely already have an Open ID! More information on Open ID can be found at http://openid.net/

Sound like a fun way to celebrate our fandom? We’d love your help!

To volunteer, please visit the Welcome Post at http://tome-awards.livejournal.com/24431.html, and then stop by the Volunteer Roles thread at http://tome-awards.livejournal.com/3611.html to see where your individual talents could be of best use.

The Volunteer Pool at ToME is looking forward to your participation and questions.

Fanart: The Hobbit

A fabulous piece of fanart, linked to me by a friend.

Casting spoilers for The Hobbit, and an understanding of BBC's Sherlock will help immensely.

I have been terribly remiss as a mod, but what are your thoughts on The Hobbit news that's been offered our way so far? Good, bad, indifferent, absolutely cannot wait?

On Faramir, Narrative Tension, and the Undervaluing of Hobbits

I've been watching LotR movie documentaries, and I’m sorry, but I just can’t get with their rationale that what they did to Faramir was in any way necessary. I've tried to see their point, read around, tried to fall in love with the filmic vision of my characters at this narrative point, and pretty much totally failed. Mainly because I think the Henneth Annun chapters of the book have plenty of tension, drama, and anxiety.

A Presentation and a New Film

Some things of interest that have cropped up:

Amy Sturgis' presentation "When Harry Met Faërie: The Tolkien Solution to the Rowling Problem" has been recorded as part of The Audio Science Fiction Magazine; she links to both the podcast and the original article ("Harry Potter is a Hobbit: Rowling, Tolkien, and the Question of Readership") here at her journal.

She is, to paraphrase her own summary, applying Tolkien's literary theory to the Harry Potter series, addressing the divide in opinion about the "proper" audience. There seems to be a lot of cross-interest in Tolkien and HP, and I thought it an interesting application of Tolkien's theories. I'd never really given that much in-depth thought to the intended readership of HP, and she presents it in a different manner.

In more directly Tolkien-related news, Daniel McNicoll is releasing a new documentary on the sword and its standing as a symbol. There's a lot of focus on Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings--ToRN has the article here. He's working with (among others) Bob Anderson, Viggo Mortensen, and Karl Urban, with John Rhys-Davies narrating.

As a bonus, the interview is just amusing. :)

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún

This seems like a good way to kick off the actual community: Tolkien's latest posthumous work is released today.

I'm fond of Norse mythology and tend to gravitate toward the Anglo-Saxon/Norse/Welsh work he's done. Anyone else planning on picking this up/been lucky enough to see a preview?

Welcome to [community profile] jrr_tolkien, a discussion community for fans of the work by and inspired by Tolkien. Discussion, meta, reviews, and upcoming news are all welcome here.

1) Civil English. Be polite, and don't bring personal drama here--standard fare. If you've a problem with a member, please feel free to message the mod.
2) Cut long entries (e.g. if you're posting a long analysis), images larger than 300x300px, and spoilers, when they apply.
3) This is a discussion community; please see [community profile] jrr_tolkien_fic for fanfiction and [community profile] jrr_tolkien_graphics for fanart and graphics.
4) All posts must be related to Tolkien. Anything off-topic will be deleted.

"On-topic" includes information on published books, upcoming publications, lectures, panels, Tolkien-based films or computer games, and people (actors, directors, designers) involved in the production of said films. If you're unsure, please feel free to get in touch with the mod--TORN is also a good measure of what might be applicable. ;)
